How to Use a Shampoo Bar (and Why It’s Better for Your Hair + the Planet)

If you’ve ever looked at a solid shampoo bar and thought, "How do I even use this thing?", you’re not alone. I had the same question the first time I made the switch. But once I got the hang of it, I never looked back. My hair is healthier, my shower is simpler, and I feel better knowing I’m not tossing another plastic bottle into the trash.

Shampoo bars have become one of our bestsellers at Wildfire, and for good reason. They’re gentle, long-lasting, eco-friendly, and surprisingly luxurious. If you’re curious about how they work, or why they’re worth trying, this post is for you.

First, what is a shampoo bar? A shampoo bar is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a concentrated, solid version of liquid shampoo, made without the water and the plastic bottle. Ours are made with clean ingredients and come completely plastic-free. Most people notice their hair feels softer, less weighed down, and easier to manage after switching.

How to use a shampoo bar

It’s easier than you think. Here’s how I use mine: 1. Wet your hair completely. Give your hair a good rinse to loosen up any product buildup or oils. 2. Wet the shampoo bar. Rub it between your hands for a few seconds to activate the lather. You can also glide it directly across your scalp a few times if you prefer. 3. Massage into your scalp. Use your fingers to work up a lather, just like you would with liquid shampoo. Focus on the roots and let the suds run through the ends. 4. Rinse thoroughly. Make sure to rinse out all the product, especially if you’re new to shampoo bars and your hair is adjusting. 5. Let the bar dry between uses. This is key. Store your bar on a slatted soap dish or somewhere it can fully dry out. It will last much longer that way.

Why it’s better for your hair

Most liquid shampoos are loaded with fillers and harsh sulfates that strip your hair of its natural oils. Shampoo bars tend to be much gentler, especially the ones we stock at Wildfire. They cleanse without over-drying, and because they’re more concentrated, you use less product. Many of our customers notice their hair gets less oily between washes and has more volume and shine overall.

Why it’s better for the planet

This one’s big. Shampoo bars are completely plastic-free. That means no bottle to toss, no pump to recycle, and no waste sitting in a landfill for the next hundred years. They’re also travel-friendly, waterless, and often last longer than traditional bottles so you’re getting more for your money, with way less impact on the environment.

Final thoughts

If you’ve been curious about shampoo bars, this is your sign to give one a try. The switch might feel small, but it adds up. One bar replaces two to three bottles of shampoo. One swap can lead to another. One better choice at a time. And the best part? You don’t have to compromise on quality. Your hair and the planet will thank you.
