Altoona is getting ready for one of the biggest railroad events in history! Union Pacific's legendary Big Boy No. 4014, the world's largest operating steam locomotive, will be making its first-ever visit to Altoona as part of its 2026 East Coast tour celebrating America's 250th anniversary. Thousands of railfans and visitors are expected to be in town to experience this once-in-a-lifetime event. The locomotive will arrive in Altoona on Wednesday, July 8, be on public display July 9-10, and make its historic trip around the world-famous Horseshoe Curve on Saturday, July 11.

What to Expect During Big Boy Week
July 8: Big Boy No. 4014 is scheduled to arrive in Altoona after traveling across Pennsylvania.
July 9-10: The locomotive will be on public display in Altoona from 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM, with free viewing available.
July 11: Big Boy departs Altoona and travels around the iconic Horseshoe Curve before continuing west. The Horseshoe Curve viewing event is sold out, but many visitors will be throughout the Altoona area hoping to catch a glimpse of this historic locomotive.
